Andrew Smith

Andrew Smith obtained his medical degree from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1988. He has been a consultant anaesthetist at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary since 1998 and Director of the Patient Safety Research Unit there since 2008. He is also Honorary Professor of Clinical Anaesthesia in the Faculty of Health and Medicine at Lancaster University. Clinically, his interests are in airway management, day case surgery, ophthalmic anaesthesia and paediatrics.

Research

In academic terms, he has been involved in projects using a variety of methodologies, including systematic reviews, qualitative techniques, database analysis and clinical measurement. His research centres on professional knowledge, evidence in practice, communication, risk and safety. As sole or co-applicant he has held project grants totalling over £2 million from the UK NHS Service Delivery and Organisation R&D Programme, the UK Patient Safety Research Programme and the European Commission, including a 5-year personal patient safety research development grant (2007-12) from the UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).This led to the formation of the Lancaster Patient Safety Research Unit, one of the few such units to be housed within an acute NHS Trust.. He has been an editor in the Cochrane Anaesthesia Review Group, based in Copenhagen, since 2000, and recently was awarded Cochrane Collaboration Programme Grants from the NIHR for a series of systematic reviews on the safety and quality of perioperative care (2011-14) and recovery after surgery and critical illness (2014-17). His previous work on education and expertise in anaesthesiology focused on the tacit elements of anaesthetic knowledge and practice and how these are acquired in training and used in practice. This contribution was recognised by the award of the George Arnott Professorship by the UK Royal College of Anaesthetists (2004).

Medical education

He has been involved with medical education for many years and at many levels.
He has been associated with the medical school at Lancaster since its early days and has served as interviewer for selection, examiner, supervisor of Special Study Modules and PBL tutor; since 2013 he has been Year 4 lead for undergraduates at Lancaster. He co-led the Royal College of Anaesthetists’ excellence project (2009-10) in response to the Tooke report’s criticisms of postgraduate medical education.  His sustained contributions to education were recognised in 2011 by the award of Fellowship both of the Higher Education Academy and the Academy of Medical Educators; he is now an assessor for applications to the latter Academy. He was Academic Foundation Programme lead for the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust from 2006 to 2010, having led one of only 6 successful bids in the North Western region to host academic Foundation trainees. He is also in demand as a lecturer in this country and Europe and thus contributes to lifelong learning of qualified anaesthetists and other health professionals.

National and specialty roles

Within anaesthesia, he is a member of the Professional Standards Committee of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA). He has also been an advisory member of the Safe Anaesthesia Liaison Group (RCoA/Association of Anaesthetists) since 2008. He acted as an expert assessor for the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death’s enquiry into the perioperative care of the high risk surgical patient (2011), as an advisory member of the Expert Panel on the National Institute for Clinical Excellence’s diagnostic advisory group on depth of anaesthesia monitoring (2012) and a member of the Academy of Royal Medical College’s working party on safe sedation (2013). He has been an editor for the journal Anaesthesia since 2012. He has also chaired the European Society of Anaesthesiology’s Guidelines Committee (2009-12). He was also co-author of the 2010 Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology, a Europe-wide initiative to improve the safety of patient care, and was part of the Task Force charged with its implementation.
