Alder Hey Paediatric Difficult Airway Course

The course is aimed at anaesthetists of all grades and ODPs.

Alder Hey is one of only four stand-alone paediatric trusts in the UK. It is home to the supra-regional craniofacial unit, the regional cleft lip and palate unit, and a tertiary referral centre for ENT surgery.

This course aims to teach delegates the techniques for managing the difficult paediatric airway that are practiced at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, with meticulous attention to detail regarding the selection and use of appropriate equipment and anaesthetic techniques.

Hands-on skills workshops focus on equipment and techniques for difficult intubation in children including the use of video-bronchoscopes, the Bonfils and Brambrink rigid optical stylets, rigid bronchoscopes, emergency front-of-neck access, one-lung ventilation, TIVA for airway endoscopy, nasal high-flow oxygen and ultrasound of the airway and chest. The skills workshops are supplemented by lectures, including a lecture from one of our ENT surgeons on airway pathology in children, stridor and tracheostomies. We finish with a few case presentations for discussion.

The course is limited to 18 delegates to allow plenty of hands-on practice and the opportunity for discussion and questions.
