A one-day course for Anaesthetists (from stage 2 Anaesthetic Residents to Consultants) that aims to
equip individuals with strategies for managing adult patients with airway obstruction through
integrated learning of technical skills and human factors that influence decision-making. It is geared
towards individuals who do not have regular ENT/MaxFax sessions, but could be presented with such
patients as a complication of routine care or whilst on-call.
The course will:-
1. Generate discussions on human performance limitations, decision-making processes and the use of
guidelines.
2. Facilitate a panel-led discussion on the pathophysiology of airway problems and how this
influences decision-making using case presentations.
3. Utilise mastery learning principles to ensure delegates gain experience in the following skills:
Intubation via SAD, Nasendoscopy, HFNO/Optiflow set-up and emergency surgical airway.
4. Culminate in an immersive simulation session followed by a facilitated debrief focusing on the human
factors and challenges of decision-making in these complex clinical emergency situations.
