DAS approved course

WAM course is aimed at teaching airway management to allied health care practitioners and junior trainees. Our target audience is ODPs (qualified/student), AED nurses, ICU nurses, Outreach nurses, recovery practitioners, paramedics and junior trainees (anaesthesia, ENT, AED, respiratory medicine).

We are proud to say that our faculty is derived from international and national airway experts who have extensive experience of teaching airway management skills. Faculty also consists of senior ODPs who deliver practical training to student ODPs on daily basis and are enthusiasts of difficult airway management.

The main aim of this course is to provide practical experience of airway devices, update knowledge of recent advances, develop confidence of helping senior anaesthetists in critical airway scenarios and increase awareness of human factors in such situations.

This full day course has 3 components, short lectures, hands on workshop and simulations of acute airway emergencies.  

Lectures - Mechanisms of laryngoscopy, Lessons from NAP4 report for Anaesthesia, Lessons from NAP4 report for ICU &AED, Human factors in crisis airway management

Workshops - 5 work stations- Rapid Sequence Induction, Videolaryngoscopy (CMac, Airtraq, Glidescope, King vision), Awake fibreoptic intubation with use of Remifentanil sedation, Asleep Fibreoptic Intubation- using Berman airway or Aintree Catheter Exchange techniques, Front of Neck- Needle/Surgical Cricothyrotomy/Manujet

Simulation - High fidelity simulator to give realistic settings for acute airway emergencies. (Focus is on practice of DAS guidelines consolidating messages from NAP4 and develop awareness of Human Factors in airway crisis)
